Cloud adoption needs to be undertaken strategically | ALC Training News

Cloud technologies have evolved significantly in recent years, growing from a background consideration to a must-have in a short space of time.

This is evidenced by the rapid growth in the space, which is only set to expand even further over the next few years. According to the Cisco Global Cloud Index: Forecast and Methodology, 2013-2018, software-as-a-service workloads alone will grow to account for 59 per cent of all cloud workloads, up from 41 per cent in 2013.

The technologies make it easy for organisations of all sizes to facilitate new processes such as remote working, and take advantage of numerous connected applications.

However, any cloud adoption needs to be undertaken with a strategic approach, possibly with a capable IT framework.

Why strategy is important

When moving to the cloud, it's easy for a businesses to handle the process poorly – especially as the technologies are still relatively new.

According to Michael Warrilow, the director of the Gartner Infrastructure, Operations and Data Center Summit, Australian businesses can be looked to as a perfect example of correct strategies.

"What we are seeing is that Australian organisations have a more strategic approach to cloud infrastructure than counterparts globally, largely because they started a bit later and in a more controlled fashion," he said.

"They didn't just fall into it without coordination. Australians organisations really only kicked off with cloud infrastructure-as-a-service in 2013.

He noted that cloud is a higher priority in Australia than other countries, with a focus on spending less on providers and systems and instead on driving more value.

Certainly, this approach will need to continue if the cloud is to be successful over the next few years.

Businesses should consider the benefits of a technology framework like ITIL – as they're designed to deliver best practice processes for an IT project.
